Actually, the only thing I want to make clear in my introductory post is that I do not tat like your grandmother. I am just guessing that your grandmother tats because everyone I have talked to has a grandmother who tats. Or great-grandmother. Someone wrinkly.
Instead of making doilies and lace edging for hankies, I make badass steampunk and Victorian-inspired jewelry. I am 23 and haven't yet reached that time in my life where I need a doily under the vase in the foyer. Hell, I don't even have a foyer. I have taken this "old lady" craft and turned it into some badass art that you can wear, and people will compliment you for being so awesome.
